Why It’s a Must-Do

Value. Manage. Restore. Love. That’s the International Crane Foundation motto. A nonprofit that works globally to protect these long-necked birds and preserve their ecosystem and habitat, the ICF is the only place on earth where you can see all 15 species, including those that are endangered, in their natural surroundings.

Who Will Love It

The International Crane Foundation is a draw for conservationists, students, wildlife enthusiasts, and animal lovers alike, all of whom get absorbed in bird culture, trail hikes, and gift shop finds. But, really, shouldn’t everyone give a whoop about whooping cranes — and every other species of crane?

When to Visit

In the spring and fall, the cranes are wandering and moving through the wetlands and grasses at high numbers. So the foundation is closed in the winter, reopening to visitors at the beginning of May and running visits and tours through October.
