What It’s a Must-Do?

Wisconsin’s newest trail, the Great Sauk State Trail, is a paved 10.5-mile route adorned with picturesque bluffs, rivers, and prairies. Beginning at the base of an old railroad bridge on the south side of Sauk City, hikers and bikers can follow the trail as it winds through two historic towns nestled above the Wisconsin River.

Exciting future plans for the trail will make biking from the Mississippi River to the Wisconsin state capitol possible.

Who will love it

Happy trails to all our hikers, inliners, and cyclers. The trail is paved with asphalt, ensuring a smooth ride from start to sunset. History buffs, however, may enjoy the trail the most. The state’s newly constructed pathway heads into Badger Lands, formerly a massive WWII ammunition plant.

When to visit

Exploring this world-class trail can be done anytime of the year — it really just depends on your preference. Wildflowers are in full bloom in the spring, there are plenty of places to make pit stops when the summer sun is a bit too much, fall foliage takes center stage later in the year, and sunsets look just as beautiful under a goose-down coat as they do in warmer climates.
