Indigenous Peoples’ Day of Sauk County 2023 centers around honoring Wakąjaziga (Chief Yellow Thunder) and Haakejanįheįga (Always in the Back)and Indigenous connections to the land.
The event begins at 12 pm at the Aldo Leopold Foundation on Levee Road and will featuring Ho-Chunk artisans and crafters, food samples, musicians, and exhibits for display. At 1 pm, formal remarks will be made regarding the importance of this day. At 2 pm, buses will shuttle guests to Chief Wakąjaziga/Yellow Thunder Memorial to participate in a short ceremony to dedicate a new stone marker, interpretive panels, and Ho-Chunk history walk.
