SUMMARY:Lazy Beaver Race
DESCRIPTION:The Lazy Beaver Canoe and Kayak Race may not be so lazy this year when it is held on Sept. 28. While for the past several years\, the Baraboo River from LaValle to Reedsburg has been fairly open without the need for paddlers to portage or lift over logs\, that probably won’t be the case this year. Weather has not been kind to the Baraboo and other southern Wisconsin rivers this year. An extremely wet spring\, accompanied by strong winds\, knocked a lot of trees down. Unfortunately  many of those trees fell all the way across the Baraboo River. When I paddled from La Valle to Reedsburg in early June\, there at least five big jams I had to river ninja my kayak over\, under and through\, cutting the openings I could with a bow saw and clippers.

SUMMARY:Baraboo River Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Baraboo River Paddle\, Baraboo\, WI\nHelp River Alliance of Wisconsin celebrate our 30th anniversary by enjoying the rivers people have worked hard to protect and restore. On Saturday\, August 26\, we will paddle the Baraboo River together and learn the history of this valuable and scenic gem.\nBoat registration ends at 20 boats registered. Afternoon picnic and river history talk registrations are unlimited \nThe Friends of the Baraboo River Board has endorsed an effort to apply to the National Park Service to designate the Baraboo River as part of the National Water Trails System. This is essential to the Friend’s Vision Statement and something that will greatly benefit the region in many ways. This will be a year long effort.\nYou can help by either donating to the Friends of the Baraboo River or by becoming a member. We will update you on the progress over the next year as this application process moves ahead.

SUMMARY:Lazy Beaver Canoe Race
DESCRIPTION:As the Baraboo River winds through Sauk County on its way to meet the Wisconsin River\, it offers a relaxing canoe outing with no rapids or falls but an abundance of wildlife. In 2002 the final dam on the river was removed\, making the Baraboo the longest free-flowing river in the nation. The river is known for its beautiful rock outcroppings and is a nesting area for bald eagles\, and each July\, the river is the site of the Lazy Beaver Canoe Race. The race has a timed interval start and attracts paddlers of all skill levels. Serious racers can cover the 14-mile stretch in a little over two hours\, while others might take 5-6 hours to complete. \nThe race’s starting point is in LaValle on the south side of the river\, east of the Highway 58 bridge. The race starts in LaValle at 10 a.m. with the finish line at the Granite Avenue landing in Reedsburg\, approximately 11 river miles downstream. There are several canoe and kayak racing divisions and paddlers of all skill levels are invited to participate. Some race\, some just enjoy a good day on the river. \nSponsored by the Reedsburg Kiwanis\, any profits from the race will go toward river-related projects such as continuing log jam clearing.
