SUMMARY:Eyes on the Skies: Badger Talk by Dr. Jim Lattis\, UW Space Place Director
DESCRIPTION:The library is excited to welcome you to a Badger Talk with Dr. Jim Lattis\, just in time for the April 8 solar eclipse! \nThis talk introduces the stars\, constellations\, and interesting objects of the current season sky. We’ll talk about observing the brighter planets and how to find them in the night sky\, along with other objects suitable for amateur observing. We’ll also feature any important eclipses\, meteor showers\, or other interesting astronomical events visible in the near future\, as well as observing tips and the astronomical use of telescopes and binoculars. \nJim Lattis holds a Ph.D. in History of Science from UW–Madison and is the author of many publications in that field. He helped create UW Space Place\, the outreach and public education center of the UW–Madison Astronomy Department and has directed it since its founding. He manages historic Washburn Observatory\, teaches courses in introductory astronomy and its history\, gives frequent public talks\, and consults widely for the media (including UW Communications\, Wisconsin and National Public Radio\, and other national networks and newspapers). He has also led many trips focused on astronomical tourism. \nThe talk will be held on Thursday\, March 21 at 6:00 PM in the library Auditorium. DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Festival will include screenings of a wide array of conservation focused films. The event will also include facilitated discussions on the films and their themes. Local organizations will share information about conservation efforts and opportunities for involvement. \nConserve Sauk Film Festival will educate attendees and participants about important resources\, environmental challenges we face\, best management practices that can be implemented on farms or in our own yards\, and lessons we can draw from significant environmental history or historical figures. We hope to inspire creative thought\, discussion\, and potential solutions to these challenges. \nThrough this festival we will better understand and appreciate the natural beauty and resources of the area\, celebrate our conservation successes\, reflect upon our relationship to the environment\, address challenges that we face\, consider how we can be part of the solution\, and connect as a county and a community over our shared world. \n​Our concept of community includes the land itself. As Aldo Leopold\, one of the many conservation figures to leave his mark on Sauk County\, said\, “We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong\, we may begin to use it with love and respect.”

As the Agency Liaison\, Jeff travels around the state to educate the public\, businesses and law enforcement on privacy protection\, data security\, identity theft\, and other areas of consumer protection. DESCRIPTION:Ride the Bigfoot Bus to Devils Lake where our guide will take us on a search for the elusive Bigfoot. We’ll search for clues along the wide gravel trail using a variety of techniques\, and after the hike\, enjoy snacks and stories around the campfire. Bring your bug spray and walking shoes. The bus will load and unload at Pierce Park\, 1100 Walnut Street. Groups with children are welcome at 5:30 pm. Teens and adults are welcome at 7:30 pm. Tickets are required and can be picked up in advance at the Carnegie-Schadde Memorial Public Library Youth Services Desk starting September 19th. \nThis program is co-sponsored by Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources/Devil’s Lake State Park. The hikes will be guided by naturalist Sue Johansen and the campfire stories will be told by local authors of Haunted Baraboo\, Shelley Mordini and Gwen Herrewig.
