SUMMARY:Indigenous Peoples' Day
DESCRIPTION:The seventh annual Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Sauk County on October 13 will celebrate the life and legacy of Ho-Chunk Chief Aahucoga\, known in English as Chief Blue Wing. Aahucoga was a leader in the resistance to the forced removal of his people from their ancestral homelands in Wisconsin from 1840 to1874. In 1851 he purchased forty acres of land a few miles south of Reedsburg that contained the village that his band of Ho-Chunk had inhabited for years. Tucked into the hills of the driftless area\, the village was built near powerful natural springs and where wild game was plentiful. Due to leaders such as Aahucoga\, the Ho-Chunk retained a foothold on their ancestral lands despite 34 years of removal efforts. The Ho-Chunk Nation of today was built upon the efforts of people like Chief Aahucoga. His life and legacy and the culture and history of the Ho-Chunk will be celebrated this year just a few miles from his village at the Sauk County Farm south of Reedsburg. Join in the festivities with Ho-Chunk food tastings\, a history walk\, the Winnebago Sons singers\, and the unveiling of a new interpretive panel. The event is free and open to everyone!

SUMMARY:Picture Perfect: Worth 1000 Words
DESCRIPTION:Some of the Society’s best “story-telling” photos will be shown by SCHS Executive Director Paul Wolter in partnership with the Carnegie-Schadde Memorial Library.\nThe old saying goes “a picture is worth 1\,000 words\,” meaning that one picture can relate as much as one thousand words can describe. The Society’s photo collection contains over 20\,000 photographs and the Society has been able to scan thousands of other images owned by individuals. Sometimes the pictures have information written on the back that helps identify the person\, place\, or subject. Other times\, pictures are unlabeled but sometimes through clues in the image\, the story behind what is shown can be determined.

SUMMARY:Eyes on the Skies: Badger Talk by Dr. Jim Lattis\, UW Space Place Director
DESCRIPTION:The library is excited to welcome you to a Badger Talk with Dr. Jim Lattis\, just in time for the April 8 solar eclipse! \nThis talk introduces the stars\, constellations\, and interesting objects of the current season sky. We’ll talk about observing the brighter planets and how to find them in the night sky\, along with other objects suitable for amateur observing. We’ll also feature any important eclipses\, meteor showers\, or other interesting astronomical events visible in the near future\, as well as observing tips and the astronomical use of telescopes and binoculars. \nJim Lattis holds a Ph.D. in History of Science from UW–Madison and is the author of many publications in that field. He helped create UW Space Place\, the outreach and public education center of the UW–Madison Astronomy Department and has directed it since its founding. He manages historic Washburn Observatory\, teaches courses in introductory astronomy and its history\, gives frequent public talks\, and consults widely for the media (including UW Communications\, Wisconsin and National Public Radio\, and other national networks and newspapers). He has also led many trips focused on astronomical tourism. \nThe talk will be held on Thursday\, March 21 at 6:00 PM in the library Auditorium. Advance registration is encouraged\, though not required. Note that eclipse glasses will be given out to participants at this talk who have registered for the event. SUMMARY:Conserve Sauk Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Festival will include screenings of a wide array of conservation focused films. The event will also include facilitated discussions on the films and their themes. Local organizations will share information about conservation efforts and opportunities for involvement. \nConserve Sauk Film Festival will educate attendees and participants about important resources\, environmental challenges we face\, best management practices that can be implemented on farms or in our own yards\, and lessons we can draw from significant environmental history or historical figures. We hope to inspire creative thought\, discussion\, and potential solutions to these challenges. \nThrough this festival we will better understand and appreciate the natural beauty and resources of the area\, celebrate our conservation successes\, reflect upon our relationship to the environment\, address challenges that we face\, consider how we can be part of the solution\, and connect as a county and a community over our shared world. \nOur concept of community includes the land itself. As Aldo Leopold\, one of the many conservation figures to leave his mark on Sauk County\, said\, “We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong\, we may begin to use it with love and respect.”

SUMMARY:Forty Acres Deep -- An Evening with Michael Perry
DESCRIPTION:Michael Perry’s new novella is a departure from his previous works of fiction. Set in a world of stark wintry beauty\, Forty Acres Deep is the brief\, unrelenting tale of one person’s attempt to make sense of a world he no longer recognizes while pitilessly calling himself into account. Seamed with grim humor and earthy revelations\, it is an unforgiving story…and yet leaves open the idea that we might surrender to hope. Michael will talk about his inspiration for the novella and his decision to self-publish it. The evening will include a panel of farmers\, moderated by Joy Kirkpatrick\, responding to the story and sharing their experiences about what it means to farm today.
