SUMMARY:Eyes on the Skies: Badger Talk by Dr. Jim Lattis\, UW Space Place Director
DESCRIPTION:The library is excited to welcome you to a Badger Talk with Dr. Jim Lattis\, just in time for the April 8 solar eclipse! \nThis talk introduces the stars\, constellations\, and interesting objects of the current season sky. We’ll talk about observing the brighter planets and how to find them in the night sky\, along with other objects suitable for amateur observing. We’ll also feature any important eclipses\, meteor showers\, or other interesting astronomical events visible in the near future\, as well as observing tips and the astronomical use of telescopes and binoculars. \nJim Lattis holds a Ph.D. in History of Science from UW–Madison and is the author of many publications in that field. He helped create UW Space Place\, the outreach and public education center of the UW–Madison Astronomy Department and has directed it since its founding. He manages historic Washburn Observatory\, teaches courses in introductory astronomy and its history\, gives frequent public talks\, and consults widely for the media (including UW Communications\, Wisconsin and National Public Radio\, and other national networks and newspapers). He has also led many trips focused on astronomical tourism. \nThe talk will be held on Thursday\, March 21 at 6:00 PM in the library Auditorium. Advance registration is encouraged\, though not required. Note that eclipse glasses will be given out to participants at this talk who have registered for the event. DESCRIPTION:Conserve Sauk Film Fest is designed to celebrate and educate our community around conservation issues and our relationship to the environment. \nThe 2023 Festival will include screenings of a wide array of conservation-focused films. Films including Sacred Cow\, Sym-BEE-o-sis\, Breaking Trail\, and Era of Megafires will be featured among with many other incredible films at this year’s festival. The festival also has the honor of premiering an extended cut of the film Where Cranes Dance.\nThe complete film lineup can be found on the website at www.conservesaukfilmfest.org. The event will also include facilitated discussions on the films and their themes. Local organizations will share information about conservation efforts and opportunities for involvement. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is appreciated but not required to attend this event. \nThrough this festival we seek to better understand and appreciate the natural beauty and resources of the area\, celebrate our conservation successes\, reflect upon our relationship to the environment\, address challenges that we face\, consider how we can be part of the solution\, and connect as a county and a community over our shared world. Our concept of community includes the land itself. As Aldo Leopold\, one of the many conservation figures to leave his mark on Sauk County\, said\, “We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us.
